What climate variables have been processed in each batch?

The method developed by the Met Office Hadley Centre to derive probabilistic climate projections can only process a limited number of variables at the same time. This group of variables, and the associated underlying model output, is termed a batch. Robust joint probabilities between probabilistic climate projections for variables can only be obtained if they have been processed in the same batch. Knowledge of which variables have been processed in each batch is required in order to produce joint probability plots of the probabilistic information over land.

There is only one processing batch for the marine probabilistic projections, so any two variables can be selected to produce a joint probability plot over marine regions.

In detail

The allocation of variables between the two batches is shown below; joint probabilities can be calculated between variables in the same batch only.
Batch one
  • Mean temperature
  • Maximum temperature
  • Minimum temperature
  • Temperature of coolest day
  • Temperature of warmest day
  • Temperature of coolest night
  • Temperature of warmest night
  • Precipitation (percentage change)
  • Change in precipitation on wettest day
  • Relative humidity
  • Cloud amount

Batch two
  • Specific humidity
  • Net surface long wave flux
  • Net surface short wave flux
  • Total downward shortwave flux
  • Mean sea-level pressure
