Sea level rise, absolute

The elevation of the surface of the sea with respect to a fixed datum.

In detail

Observed or projected changes in absolute sea level take into account in the elevation of the water surface itself, caused by changes in the volume of the world’s oceans. Projections of absolute sea level indicate future changes in the mean level of oceans, and do not take into account changes in land-level (see relative sea level).

UKCP09 provides a projection of changes in absolute sea level for the UK as a whole, based on the results of many IPCC AR4 global climate models. This represents a significant advance from UKCIP02, which reported changes in global-average absolute sea level from a single global climate model. UKCP09 only provides regional projections for changes in relative sea level.

  • More details about the projections of absolute changes in sea level around the UK can be found in Section 3.5 of the UKCP09 Marine & coastal projections report, including tables, maps and plume plots.

  • The UKCP09 Marine & coastal projections report also includes discussion of what determines sea level in Section 3.1 and describes the approach adopted in UKCP09 in Section 3.2.

  • Some worked examples were developed prior to the launch of UKCP09 that used dummy outputs to examine how the UKCP09 marine and coastal projections might be used. The worked examples should not be interpreted as a best practice method for using UKCP09, but as one way of using the outputs.

  • Customised graphical outputs relating to projections of changes in absolute sea level at user-specified coastal locations can be obtained using the UKCP09 User Interface (external website).

  • Details about recent trends in observed absolute sea level around the UK can be found in Section 1.8 of the UKCP09 Observed trends report.
