What is it?

It is a downscaling tool that can be used to generate statistically plausible daily and hourly time series comprised of set of climate variables at a 5 km resolution that are consistent with the underlying 25 km resolution climate projections. Our intention in providing this information is to further support the assessment of vulnerabilities, impacts and adaptation options.

Vulnerability, impacts and adaptation assessments often require higher temporal and spatial resolution climate information than are available from the probabilistic projections monthly and 25km grid squares respectively).  In the past, users have either developed their own downscaling methods or used methods developed by others.  Recognising this need and based on concerns over the multiplicity of approaches and of the potential for inappropriate methods being used, a decision was taken to include a weather generator tool that could be used within the context of the available probabilistic projections and for which there would be available information on how it could be and should not be used.

The UKCP09 Weather Generator produces plausible time series of daily and hourly climates with the following characteristics:

  • Presented as a number of time series each comprised of a set of variables typically used to describe daily and hourly climate see weather generator report
  • Indicative of possible climates at a 5 km grid square or for a user-specified grouping of 5 km grid squares (up to a maximum of 1000 km2)
  • Consistent with the selected 25 km UKCP09 climate information (current or future projections)

Users will create using the weather generator available within the User Interface a minimum of 100 plausible time series for a selected 30-year time periods and emissions scenario.  Further guidance on generating the time series, including considerations and limitations is available here

It is recommended that prior to using the UKCP09 Weather Generator users should familiarise themselves with the associated assumptions and limitations, especially in terms of what they mean for how the resulting time series can and should not be used and interpreted.
