Will spatial analogues be provided?
It is not currently planned to produce
spatial analogues (i.e. give an indication of where in the world the UK
might be like in 30 years time) for UKCP09. Although these can be
useful for communication purposes, it is usually impossible to find
exact analogies that span more than one variable (e.g. finding
somewhere that has the same temperature and precipitation
characteristics). Other factors (such as daylight hours) are dependant
on latitude rather than climate.
In detail
We recognise that spatial analogues has previously been used as a media
technique to give some context to future climate. This is not
necessarily scientifically robust, so none are provided in UKCP09. However, it is planned to include information on event analogues such as a 2003-type summer.
